Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Here's a phenomenon that's happening just at my backyard - India.

In 2001, There were about 930 females to males. The world average is 100 males to 105 females.

The main reason for the widespread female foeticide and the continuing prevalence of female infanticide in parts of India was the dowry system, which although long prohibited by law, continues to play a significant role in Indian society. Dowries and wedding expenses regularly run to more than a million rupees ($35,000) in a country where the average civil servant earns about 100,000 rupees ($3,500) a year.

The situation is even worse regarding educating these children. India, which is estimated to have some 432 million illiterate people, must give top priority to compulsory elementary education for social and economic growth to occur. 64 percent of Indian men are literate, but fewer than two out of five women can read and write. About 41 percent of Indian girls under the age of 14 do not attend school.

There is a little-known battle for survival going in some parts of the world. Those at risk are baby girls, and the casualties are in the millions each year. The weapons being used against them are prenatal sex selection, abortion and female infanticide – the systematic killing of girls soon after they are born.”

According to a recent report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) up to 50 million girls and women are missing from India’ s population as a result of systematic gender discrimination in India.

Girls have a right to live in 2010. This discrimination can't be tolerated.

'Nuff said.

gender-based violence, systematic natal selection, trafficking in women and children are horribly prevalent among societies with the available affluence to separate field of vision from reality; with the poverty to separate existence from opportunity and expectation from hope. Communication, collaboration, criminal prosecution of those who would deny half our population their humanity simply because of gender or economic status must increase to offset these problems. Individuals can make a difference, social enablers to oppression must cease... The world is interconnected, interdependent, and in the long term, how can the children of any be secure, when the children of so many are at risk? Thank you for the post.

agreed. some traditions should be abolished in order for societies to advance. it should not be allowed in this highly connected world.

+1 LI. This is a pretty grim situation where cultural beliefs / norms are upheald to the detriment of a group of people. Because of the cultural practice behind this, it is important that activities are put in place at the grassroots to influce behaviour, similar to how communities and countries are dealing with the issue of female genital mutilaton.

Hi a.v.koshy. I believe you're still having a great deal of rage even as I post this. Hope this clarifies everything I say. This was the first thing that I was concerned about and had to address after seeing it on my mobile in the afternoon.

Firstly, the term "backyard" was used to describe a neighbour. I did not expect this reaction coming, so I'll change it after this comment.

I am aware of what's happening in China. The One Child Policy and the great burden in terms of tax that parents need to pay if they own a second child...and of course the pain parents feel when they find out their child is going to be a girl.

We've got to address both problems in tandem. I'm Chinese myself, but that doesn't mean that I should put China's problems on top of India's. In every dimension, you are correct.

What we should acknowledge is that discrimination is happening, and both communities should take action against it. Their lives don't deserve to be lost just because they have different beliefs...or purely because they have a different gender. This is just one problem. There are more out there.

I hope this clears things up, and I apologise fully for any disapproval conjured.

@a.v.koshy @Lim Wei, you both raise very valid points. Children all over the world are at risk, and need great champions to raise awareness to their plight(s) and advocate for positive change. As Lim Wei said, this is just one problem, and there are more out there. As so many have said, in EVOKE, and throughout history, change can come in great waves, or one step at a time. Every step must help, somehow. Thank you for the discussion.

Much of what I wanted to say has already been said here.

In India, practices like Female Infanticide, Sati and Dowry are concentrated in rural, uneducated people.
And another problem, rape is is prevalent all over India, with one girl raped every 20 seconds.

If you haven't already, watch Sunita Krishnan's TED Talk,

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
