I am a student of innovation. Currently, I am a Teaching Assistant in a design class at SUNY Oswego. It's the only college course I have ever taken in college (I am a second semester Senior). When I read the 33 Innovation Tips, all of them brought me to the teachings of my teacher who preaches a Cradle-to-Cradle method of design. One challenge we've presented the students who are taking the class now is to pick up a pen or pencil off of the ground and bring it into the lab. This makes our world a cleaner, better looking place, plus it gives our lab some extra pens and pencils to have in case anyone needs one. Plus, it gives our students a little bit of humanity.
The wh*** cradle-to-cradle ideology is based upon one of the 33 Innovation tips:
- Innovate on existing platforms (We’ve got bicycles and mobile phones in Africa, plus lots of metal to weld. Innovate using that stuff, rather than bringing in completely new tech.)
Take what you have around you and make it into something useful. Although reusing is mostly just putting waste somewhere else, using found materials in design can be an up-cycling process! For example, old tires look terrible on the landfill, but turf companies have ground them up and used them in the beautiful turf fields we see in our football stadiums!
I think the best tips for innovation is to use what's readily available to you!
