was just reminded of this, something one of my best friends made me aware of, so one more post before i go to sleep...
i want to share a bit about a woman working for social change on several fronts: Irshad Manji
one is her Moral Courage project. so what is moral courage? from her website, "it's the willingness to be original, unique and different from everyone else in your group." her discussion starts with four questions:
* I disagree with my community about...
* If I say what I think, the worst that can happen is...
* If I say what I think, the best that can happen is...
* Should I say what I think? I've decided that...
she conducts a special course at NYU Wagner, and is researching ways to spread the message. while i know what it is like to speak out and be ridiculed and punished, i have never had to do so in a place where speaking out could mean exile or death. i have the utmost respect for the people with that kind of courage.
her other main issue is connecting Reformist Islam with human rights and freedom. this includes the formation of activist groups and societies, a focus on critical thinking and the Reformist Quran that reveals mistranslations, some INTENTIONAL, that have led to beliefs that cause social inequality (available for FREE in multiple languages).
thank you, Irshad Manji, for seeking TRUTH with LOVE in your heart.
