A crash course in changing the world.
The secret for social innovation which most spoke to me was Paul Polak's tip to "think like a child – children have no limit to their
thinking". The words of advice reminded me of Picasso and the quote, “It
took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a
child”. It is quite widely known that through his exploration within the cubist
art movement Picasso aimed to recreate the approaches and mentality which a
child naturally possesses and I feel that a parallel of such thought processes
should be carried over into social innovation. An important attribute for a
social innovator is creativity as one may often find themselves with limited
resources and a problem to fix. Unfortunately it seems that creativity is a
trait which many people suppress as they grow up but by looking at the way in
which children think, there is no denying that it exists in all of us. By
remembering to think like a child social innovators can free their suppressed
creativity and utilise it in helping others and the world in general. It seems
that it is not a case of thinking outside of the box but rather, think like a
child! If social innovators can take this piece of advice then hopefully the
simple, cost effective and easy to implement solutions, which are always over
looked, can be reached.
