Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

No game without the drama!

My friend John Patrick just published this:

attention people this website is not what you think it is a scam , the world bank wants to expand into other areas thay will take youe innovative ideas and use them for thear own marketing and money making plans , i give alot of good ideas and thay closed my account, thay want your ideas and then thay will send you a printable diploma, i alread have one that says i am a doctor never went to med school and never treated a pacient

I find this interesting for a lot of reasons.

First of all: What happened to John's blog entries? Did they get erased? All of them? If so - why? Copyright infringement?

Has there been any discussion about this anywhere?

I have sent a PM to John asking him for more information about this.

Then there is John's statements.

The world bank wants to expand into other areas thay will take youe innovative ideas and use them for thear own marketing and money making plans

Oh, nothing like a great conspiracy theory! Whether or not this is true, well, we will see. I actually haven't seen any EULA for EVOKE, and I don't Really know who owns the rights to the content I publish here. Has anyone seen anything?

Well, just take a look at the Terms and Conditions - you find the link to it on the bottom of every page. I quote:

24. User grants The World Bank a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, fully sub-licensable and transferable right to use, reproduce, modify, delete, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform and display suchPosted Information throughout the world in any media. I am not a lawyer, so I don't know how this related to that of other games. We all know that Blizzard owns the character I build in World of Warcraft. Facebook has more ownership over our data than most of us are aware of.

These are important questions, and we as players need to know the full extent of our rights - in this game as well as IRL ("In Real Life")

Hey Marcinina - yes, I should have added what you just quoted. My bad :P Thanks! I don't think this is an issue of TWB taking Ownership of our data, but rather what they are allowed to DO with our data :)

Hi Raymond a couple of things. Firstly, I cannot comment on the case of your friend John at the moment because I don't ave any further information. It might be a copyright issue. EVOKE are trying to encourage players to post original content (i.e. photos, videos and copy) and discourage posting of content from elsewhere. I fear we may get into serous breaches of copyright if the site hosts material from other places.

On a more positive note - I am SUPER excited about your Guild idea from your earlier post and from the email you just sent to your friends (myself included). We seriously need to see motivated agents like yourself forming groups (guilds) to collaborate on some of the upcoming missions. I really want to see, in particular, multi-national teams working together. It would be great if you progress your Guild idea in the public discussions (maybe start a new thread in the Discuss section). I'd be even more thrilled if your Guild contained people from some of the developing nations who we are hoping will benefit from some of our collaborative innovation.

Please let me know what you think. What ideas do you have for the guild? How might you work together? Organise yourselves? I'm a very interested. I'm giving you +20 for your creativity so far.

Thanks

Simon

Hey Simon, thanks for your message.

Well, of course I will write more about AWAKE (i think we will settle for this name, hoping that EVOKE wont sue us for copyright infringement or something ;)) (the problem is that AWAKE almost SOUNDS like EVOKE - try say both words out loud after each other).

AWAKE is the acronym, and it is also the word - awake. We are awake. Always.

I am of course thinking about having members from developing countries. That's the wh*** point of this. To be awake, on different continents, in different contexts, in different parts of society.

AWAKE is the first guild maybe, but I dearly hope we will not be the only one. I hope we get tons of competition. Competition feeds evolution. Just look at for instance how top World of Warcraft guilds are competing. Well, many outsiders don't "get" it, how the scene in a game can be so intense, so filled with all kinds of organizations, and how a successful guild can have managers, have a PR department, etcetc.

And thats for a guild in a Game that takes place purely in a fictional world.

IRL (in real life, as opposed to in-game) everything is seen as being so serious. When people create organizations, they need a charter, they need a lawyer, they need this or that. Well, artists are exceptions, and in that sense I guess this is an artistic statement, as well as a political.

Later on I will add some video elements explaining AWAKE, but all that takes work, and we require more members. But before I post on the forums/public discussions, I want a few more things to be a bit more "settled". I want them to feel that yes, they are still at the Start of this, AWAKE is still forming, but still, the vision is ready, we have something prepared.

The John issue: Well, I figured that it was a copyright thing, to be honest. My point is that the discussion is important. :) As I wrote in my quest - I like to play the devil's advocate sometimes, or to ask questions, but (hopefully) without becoming a mere troll. Trolls are boring, don't feed the troll :D

More soon!

Hello agents. All EVOKE agents are asked to contribute original work to the game. As stated in the terms of service, members may not post copyrighted material from other websites as their own work. My team will continue to request that any member who repeatedly posts copyrighted material as their own work take down the material they do not have the rights/permission to post. My team may remove any content that is clearly in violation of copyright law. Anyone who repeatedly violates these terms of service without regard for copyright law may be blocked from the network.

@Alchemy: Yes, I suspected as much. There will need to be set some examples. The community needs to balance itself over time. In this case the guy reacted pretty strongly, I guess, hehe.
Evil evil World Bank! Have a great day, Alchemy!

Alchemy is right. Copyright matter is very important.

So I have a question. If I embed a video from another source, does this infringe copyright?

ATB!
Comment by THIAGO CARVALHO PELUCIO SILVA on March 5, 2010 at 6:41pm
What about photos we find in internet and can't find the photographer name. Does that inflict copyright?
Comment by Raymond M. Kristiansen on March 5, 2010 at 6:43pm
@THIAGO: It depends on the material on the video ;)

It also depends on many other things.

The guidelines are straightforward. We just need to figure out how strictly those guidelines will be followed by admins. We all know someone who got some music video removed from Youtube because it had copyrighted material. But then again we also have ironic stories such as this one

Clearly, if you just post 20 videos which are blatantly copyright infringements, you have high risk of some admin pulling the posts down. If you post 1 video which is on the edge or, strictly speaking, trespassing it - well, the context is different :)
Comment by Raymond M. Kristiansen on March 5, 2010 at 6:45pm
@Thiago: I don't think you should worry Too much. If you really find that EVOKE is more strict than for instance flickr.com - well, then post the picture on your flickr.com account, and then link to it from here.

If discussion on this site is strangled because everyone is afraid of posting some copyrighted material, then we really haven't progressed much as a species.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
