Hello all,
Today, I'd like to blog about the role played by journalists during a crisis. This subject is very interesting as we come to globalization.
First of all, let's see an exemple: Greece. It was a "small" crisis until the media jumped into the story and started to write articles every hour or so about how bad the situation is. The result was the unjustified crash down of the stock markets around the world. On the other hand, as soon as the media will start writing good news about that situation (Greece), the stocks will go back up in a way that will be, again, over amplified.
From that point of view, media are dangerous. They don't create the crisis, but they make the small ones look huge and, by that, threaten the balance between events and predictions (and speculation).
Of course, it is way easier to sell your news when they are about the end of the world, but I strongly believe that media, by describing the very facts, fail to step back and offer a global view of the situation in a more general context.
For exemple, news are a lot about the possible contagion of the problem, but they don't offer any other scenario. There are many plausible scenarios for the future, but we only see the worst ones. For a medium, it doesn't sell much to say that maybe it won't spread. Therefore, the media become biaised toward what sells.
Today, I don't bring a solution, but I want to raise the awareness. Media are needed, but we must use our judgement whenever we read, watch or listen to them.
