A crash course in changing the world.
'This blog is inspired by an email sent to me by Agent Hayden Darrell Linders. In this email he shared a link to http://embraceglobal.org/. Embrace global has developed a low cost infant warmer designed for the developing world. The design looks like a miniature sleeping bag but in reality saves lives of vulnerable infants. It is a new, low cost solution to help keep low birth weight babies' body temperature warm so they can survive and thrive in developing countries. It is ingenious and totally cute.
This reminded me of a "keep it simple” technology (and I use this term loosely) which came to Kenya & Tanzania (and possibly other African countries) via Bogota, Colombia. This technology dubbed Kangaroo Care, is a form of caregiving where the newborn with low birthweight or premature infant is intermittently nursed skin-to-skin in a vertical position between the mother’s breasts or against the father’s chest for a non-specific period of time. Sounds pretty simple yes? It certainly is, and its benefits are huge. Kangaroo care is an inexpensive and effective alternative to inadequate and insufficient incubator care for those preterm newborn infants who had overcome initial problems and required only to feed and grow. It is easily initiated in hospital and continued at home providing small babies with the opportunity to be discharged early.
Simple, affordable, easy to use, cultural sensitive - talk about innovation! Agent Linders, you desever a power point from all who read this blog.
