The day Alchemy called me I was at a cafe in Reykjavík. I biked down on a rented bike after leading a community class on critical thinking. I was mainly in town to consult an new investigative journalism start-up. My main source of income isn't consulting, it's blogging, so my wife and I like to take our time in each country we visit. I took time to attend local meet-ups, performed improvised noise at a night club, and organized an all-ages critical thinking 101 class. Reykjavík is a major change of scenery after doing a tour of Africa, consulting universities on social media in online courses.
I was working on some research for my blog when I got the call about Tokyo. Immediately, gears started turning in my head. One of the first things we'll need to do is organize all the disparate actors in the local food chain - from farmers to food processors to eaters - and get them talking to each other. What would work best in Tokyo? How could we make an unconference work there? There's probably a need for ongoing events. What's the appropriate role for social media augmentation of all this?
As I call my wife to tell her about the Evoke, I wonder whether I'll be able to work in triathlon training into our schedule while we're in Tokyo...
