A crash course in changing the world.
Don’t fight culture (If people cook by stirring their stews, they’re not going to use a solar oven, no matter what you do to market it. Make them a better stove instead.)
1. If, as Clifford Geertz says, culture is simply the ensemble of stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, then we have to understand others stories to participate in them. Telling new stories together
can bring about social change.
2. Understanding culture allows us to make our actions meaningful for others and for ourselves. Without this understanding we may, rather than bringing about change, be committing symbolic violence.
3. Culture is complicated and can be seen as consisting of various forms of capital. By understanding in what realm of capital we are trying to innovate and how this realm is influenced by others, we can innovate
more effectively.
