Living in New York City, you can bet that there are a lot of restaurants both cheap and expensive that, at the end of the day, are bound to have leftover food that they won't be able to serve the next day. Many times I've seen these restaurants throw out bags upon bags of perfectly good food, leaving them on the curb outside of the restaurant for garbage trucks to pick up and haul off. It is disconcerting to think about and that is not even going into the fact that this happens every night. Fortunately there are quite a few people, homeless or living on the borderline who know of this and it is not uncommon to see them going from bag to bag to search out bread, cakes, or produce that is perfectly safe to consume, the only issue is that they're too close to their expiration dates to put out on the shelves or use in meals.
Even so, there is still quite a few people who are left out of the loop. This is where
City Harvest comes in. In a nutshell, City Harvest works with restaurants around the city to take food that would otherwise be tossed in with the garbage, and delivers that food to kitchens around the city to help feed the hungry. City Harvest has programs that range from Advocacy and Awareness to Emergency Food Programs and Nutrition Education.
