Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

The project that I have decided to research this week is the work that 'Water for People' are doing in Malawi. The reson I chose their projects in Malawi is due to the fact that it is one of the poorest countries in the world and alot of the people who live there still live in the rural areas, 85%, where there is lack of sanitation and access to clean water. Although statistics claim that 62% of rural areas have access to water it does not account for the fact that some of the facilities do not work which significantly reduces the number. Most of the toliet facilities in these areas are pit- latrines which means that there is a much higher chance of diseases spreading. 'Water for People' is trying to solve these problems by implementing schemes in association with the government and other organisations. They use either the skills or donations of these organisations to build new facilities. Instead of taking volenteers from overseas they train people in the area. I feel that this is a much better idea because then if something happens to one of the facilities they will be able to fix it. For me this is a very good example of trying to make a difference in people's lives by giving them access to a basic need.
