There appears to be two sides to food security - physical and economic. In the local Grahamstown community where I currently am staying, i think the economic side of food security is more of a struggle than the food actually existing. Here there is plenty of good quality food in the shops and lots of variety for what you can buy.,The main problem people face though is not having enough money to buy the goods. This is in contrast to Zimbabwe, where in late 2008 before the country was dollarised there was nothing to buy in the shops!!! So even if you did have enough money and could afford groceries you were not able to get them becuase they either hadnt been grown in the unproductive farms or were too expensive to import for the shop owners. When people usually see hunger on TV it is often due to droughts in areas of the globe where subsistance farmers find it hard to produce enough to feed their families. The other side of hunger that is not shown is where people do not have enough money to buy food, and i think this is an area of food security which should be highlighted more often. Just becuase you live in an area where food is avaliable, it doesnt mean that you are going to be able to afford to buy it.
