Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Get to know the People and their Needs"

This would be my secret, I just recently saw a Video titled "Debunking third-world myths with the best stats you've ever seen - Hans Rosling; http://www.ted.com/talks/hans_rosling_shows_the_best_stats_you_ve_ever_seen.html

a presentation at one of the TED conferences, and it helped me question my preconception, about the challenges of the world around me, and begged the
question, who really needs the solution I have and where do they live?

I fear that a large part of my thinking has been characterized by polarizations that are false, seeing that if I looked closer, I would find that amongst the places
where I thought problems lie, some people actually do not need my solution. I
live in a country that would considered by all standards a Third World country,
yet to assume that everyone lives on less than a dollar would be wrong on so
many fronts, to help these people one would need to interact when closely.

For me the key to any kind of innovation hinges on the accurate understanding of the people and their needs, a sort of “Walking in their shoes” this I believe
would present the problem, the foundation on which a simple, people centric
solution can be built.

It's such an eye-opening video! I live in a "First World" country and I had a lot of the stereotypes that he talks about.

Good video. I'd seen it before and forgotten the title...happy to have the link. Thanks.

Wow-- what a fantastic video! I'd never seen it before. I knew the answers to the initial 'test' about child mortality rates, but I admit to not having fully recognized the enormous progress that has been made in lowering birthrates around the globe. One of the most interesting points he made, I think, is that progress is much faster if countries focus first on improving health. A healthy population is much more likely to grow wealthier than an unhealthy one. I guess this makes sense when you think about it-- since in order to improve health you first have to educate people about what good health requires, and train a large number of people to deliver health services-- both of which are excellent investments which usually provide large dividends.

I agree this is a great video. I also like several other eye-opening videos by Hans Rosling. I posted about it in "Visualizing World Population" where he explodes the commonly believed myth about the population explosion.
