Seeing & Doing the Obvious:
Sometimes, the hardest thing is the most obvious. Sometimes, it's the most inconvenient. Sometimes, it requires sacrifice. Sometimes, it requires long term commitment. Sometimes, it requires going out of our way. Sometimes, it requires giving of our time, money, energy or resource. Sometimes it requires doing something we really don't want to do. Sometimes it's a pleasure. Sometimes it's a chore. Sometimes it's fun. Sometimes it's hard.
All of the time, it's worth it.
For me, seeing and doing the obvious involves fair trade. In NZ we're so far away from those who pick and produce the coffee, chocolate and tea that makes its' way on to our supermarket shelves.
We don't see the pain and suffering the people who produce these (arguably luxury) products for our pleasure. We don't understand the slavery. Quite simply, we either don't want to see, or aren't aware of the implications of our purchases on an illegal, immoral and heartbreaking industry.
My commitment is to only buy fairtrade coffee, tea and chocolate, and to challenge those around me to do the same....
