Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

I have learned from my travels that it is very important to know the culture of the society that you will be helping. It is important to know what they need, what they have and what they are able to do. To help a society you must study it and learn of the deficits. You must respect the people that you are trying to help and to do that you must understand what drives them to do the things that they do. I know that you must seek the understanding of others before you help them, that you can not force feed a person to liking what you do. We lived in the Phillipeans and there was much poverty and crime. I saw first hand and learned the culture and I understand why they needed fresh water, food and health care. The secret I have learned is to treat others as you would yourself. To respect others traditions and lifestyle. To become a part of them to understand them and they get to know you. Only then can you begin to make changes in a society that will compliment and assist that society..

i totally agree on understanding and respecting cultures. i believe that this is essential to the process of trying to assist people with improving their situation. an ethnocentric view of 'good culture, bad culture' leads nowhere.

however, i will have to say that sometimes a change may have to be dramatic and against cultural norms. food binding, female 'circ**cision' and slavery were all once cultural norms with long histories.

It is very important to respect, and listen to, those whom we would help, to encourge freedom, sustainability, and (@ nomadHAR) preserve non-harming traditions...
