A crash course in changing the world.
In Germany, around 3 million children are growing up in poverty. Poverty means not only that children can’t be supported and are disadvantaged in other respects in their communities, but also that they are not adequately and wrong nourished, even though there is an abundance of food in Germany.
The first fundamental step in order to escape from this vicious circle of poverty, is a regular and healthy lunch for many of these children.
To ensure the food supply of the children and the families of those, the first “deutsche Tafel” was set up in Berlin in 1993, after which many others followed and now over 870 “Tafeln” in Germany are active for people in need.
The “Tafel” has the aim to distribute all the qualitatively perfect food, that can’t be used in the economic process to the needy, and so to work against the hunger of the people on the one hand and the affluence of food on the other.
However, the “Tafel” can be organized differently. In part, soup kitchens, lunch or a mobile heat kitchens are offered, but also pure food delivery.
Limits are set by the need for financial support through donations, the donations of business companies and the help of volunteers.
In Wolfenbüttel in 2007 the “Tafel” has been established in form of food delivery. The legitimate families can pick up food a week for 1 € fee, individuals every two weeks.
