I live on a small west coast Canadian island where the vast majority of fresh vegetables have to go for a ride on our ferry to get here, most certainly after a long journey in planes and trucks beforehand. I wasn't surprised to see a local grocery sale flyer, three of the four fresh items had done so, their place of origin far far away. Do we really need this stuff? This exercise has got me thinking about that.
I doubt if anyone would take notice if our grocery store stopped ordering these three items but I suspect there would be an impact if a wh*** country did. Surely jobs would be lost, the low-waged migrant workers who need the pay, and the mass-production companies who planted these three hybird crops would have to change. The trickle-down effect would cause a fuss no doubt.
There needs to be a plan, but what? Perhaps it's a simple as one by one to allow time for change to happen and a viable solution will unfold that doesn't create another problem.
