Although Missouri is the gateway to the west; one of the biggest corn producers in the world, we still cannot meet all of our food needs. Because of job loss and the damaged economy, many food banks in Missouri are becoming overwhelmed. Families that used to be able to support themselves are no longer able to put food on the table. Two thousand new families recently started coming to the food pantry in Boone County. These people have never needed food assistance before.
Now that 1/8 Missourians rely on food support, it's time that we try to solve this problem. There are non-profit organizations like The Missouri Food Bank Association that are helping, but no other people are involved yet. I know that this is the situation in many places inside the United States, and people in America should realize that no one is safe from poverty or food shortages.
