A crash course in changing the world.
Natural disasters are not very typical for Germany. I also cannot imagine that there could be food shortage although it might be possible due to crop failures or delivery problems. Therefore I consider a health outbreak as the most possible crisis my city could face. There could be a pandemic because of accidents or carelesness in hospitals or labs.
If a pandemic or any disease would break out in Nuremberg, it would be important to collect the following information:
-what kind of disease is it?
-is there any way to protect people from getting affected?
-how many people are affected?
-what is the cause (find the origin to prevent further breakouts)?
-what are the symptoms (to recognize the disease as early as possible)?
-is there an antidote and if - where can you get it from?
-what is the best way to distribute antidotes and meds?
It is also important to develop some kind of action plan (for example if you have to evacuate a certain part of the city) and info points/meeting points where the population gets information or help if they need it. It is also important to have a special commando unit who calms down the population, evacuates buildings or districts if necessary and gives proper introductions to the population so that noone panics.
Therefore different kinds of information have to be provided via Ushahidi:
-facts about the disease (how can you recognize it, what can you do to relieve harm, where can you go if you are affected, how can you get antidotes and meds?)
-action plans (where can I get information from, do I have to get evacuated, if yes - where are the reception camps)
-behavior rules (don't panic, which stuff do you need to take with you if you have to get evacuated, what do I do when I think I am affacted)
If it is possible to find out the information and if there are action plans for disasters like that, I think Ushahidi is the perfect way to share the information with the people and as a consequence handle the situation as good as possible.
