A crash course in changing the world.
From 1967 to 1978 in the former salt mine Asse II in Remlingen in the district of Wolfenbüttel 125.000 drums containing lower-level radioactive and 1.300 barrels of medium-level radioactive waste have been stored. They are from nuclear power plants and nuclear research facility.
Since 1988, a permanent liquid flow is registered on the ceilings. Per day up to 12.000 liters of water can penetrate into the “Asse”. For this reason the stability is guaranteed only until 2014. If the individual chambers or the entire mine fall in the radioactive inventory of the barrels can pour into the groundwater in a very short time. Furthermore, the radioactive material can also get into the biosphere.
If this occurs, Ushahidi can be used to inform the people as quickly as possible. With this development they may be informed how strong the radiation in the biosphere is and how they should behave. Also, it allows to find out, what extent water is involved and whether it should be used. People can be supported and don’t feel alone with the problem. Depending on how fast and far the groundwater pollution spread, by this method inhabitants of other regions can also be informed.
This video shows the situation in the "Asse" detailed:
