A crash course in changing the world.
I chose the secret "How do people react in a Pandemic" because I think that it contains very important informations for everyone to survive a disaster. Particularly the piece of Peter Sandman, Risk Communication Consultant, is in my opinion quite surprising and useful.
There are several ways of human reactions during a disaster. When people overreact, they pause what they're doing, become hyper-vigilant, check out the environment more carefully than they normally would. The most important point: they take precautions. So overreaction is a quite useful mechanism in comparison with other responses.
Another often reaction is denial. Human beings are equiped with the circuit breaker denial. People in denial wouldn't take any precautions. But its still better than panic. In panic people do themselves harm and make things even worse. Still those two mechanism are not useful. There are five principles which can fight against denial. Those are: Legitimize fear, Things to do, Things to decide, Love and Hate. Its very interesting for me to learn that the message "Don't be afraid" is absolutely destructive. Its much better to say "Yes we are afraid, we are all afraid, we will get through this together".
