For my social innovation "hero"/role model, I have chosen Sam Goldman of
D.light.
In his visits to places without electricity, he noticed a problem; people were still using kerosene lanterns. Not only does that mean they had to constantly spend money (which they had so little) on kerosene, but they are also quite dangerous. It's not uncommon to hear of homes or schools burning down after a kerosene fire, or even people, especially children receiving severe burns while trying to do chores or study during the night.
So, once he identified the problem, he came up with a solution. Extremely affordable, durable solar-powered LED lanterns. He started this product just three years ago, and this year D.light has celebrated 1 million lives impacted by their product!
It's amazing to me to see people so driven by an idea that they can do so much in such a small amount of time. I hope one day I can see my own business/ideas take off so quickly!
