In Austin the big stores, Walmart, Randalls/Safeway and HEB have cornered the grocery market
We also have high end stores like wh*** Foods, Natural Grocery and Sun harvest. Food prices increased by a whopping 20% in april 2010, the biggest leap since 1984.
I see people sifting through the bulk food aisle because they're barely getting by on their social security and welfare payments and unemployment.
I see long lines at the drivethroughs for fast food, and smell the rank stink of grease and death that hangs around those places.
i see people at HEB in tough neighborhoods looking at aisle after aisle of white bread, bulk jam and peanut butter, bulk cheese. It is sad that people don't know where their food comes from, or who it is picked by.
Luckily, in Austin, we have the local food movement, places like the Austin Farmer's Market, which is in 2 places per week, and the HOPE farmer's market, whcih is in East austin, where more people of color live, on Sunday. I have been to all three farmers markets and they all can give good nutrition, local meat, local vegetables, and even entertainment to families. I can bike to all 3 farmer's markets and they are fairly easy to find. They have inspired me to start growing my own vegetables in my back patio. I've planted cuc**bers, beans, squash, pumpkins, onions, peppers, and soon I'll plant carrots, tomatoes and maybe eggplant.
I have improved the life of myself and my friend, Steve.
