in a bid to provide some form of food security for the unemployed workers in my church back home, some ladies and members of the youth group took it upon themselves to contribute what we term "first fruits" to these people. in a biblical sense, the first fruits are those foods that have been grown by yourself, that is, God has blessed you and your garden enough to the point where you can sustain yourself and if there is extra (which there always is), you donate to those that have no had such an experience or do not have access to gardens be it for montetary reasons or just not having a garden to work with. thus the food you have cultivated is dedicated in church and thanks are given for it etc.
although the point of this is not for the recipients to become dependant on you working hard in YOUR garden, it is a good way to give back what God has provided for you. i guess in a way it's to show how much he has been good to you and will continue to, no matter what.
as a member of the youth, i too take part in this provided anything comes out out of the garden when i do go home for holidays every now and then
