in my pocket, my phone buzzes. i'm in the middle of a conversation: it will have to wait...
it's my third year now: i am on a tour across the americas in a
mobile urban design unit that brings ideas to sprout within
communities about how to better their urban environment.
for too long, our cities have been built for capitalist productivity and efficiency, leaving our human living environments with very little human spaces.
All packed-up in a converted bus, are temporary installations which i've built (and honed) to raise awareness on the questions of urban farming, biodiversity in the city, active transportation, pollution and sustainability, environments for youth and aging populations, safety. these installations are helping individuals and communities understand the importance of everyday environments as contributors to quality of life and stimulators where pieces of ideas can be showcased for the genius talent of the passer-by to assemble in different and beautiful ways.
after a long day of serving lemonade and talking to citizens about how to claim the abandoned lot in their neighborhood and transform it into a wild garden that attracts pollinators, i get back in the the shade of the bus, kick back for a while and open a beer, taking a break before walking the dog. on my laptop screen, between letters inviting me to different cities and comments and questions from the people i've interacted with, i spot the e-mail: alchemy's call for help. i raise an eyebrow and take an other swig of beer.
time to think fast about the future: com'on dog, lets go for a walk.
