A crash course in changing the world.
I finished my undergraduate studies a couple of weeks ago at the great Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. One major problem in my school is the defacing of walls with posters, something that should not be mentioned in a civilised environment, but really, it has been the curse upon 'Africa's most beautiful campus'
A friend (also an Evoke agent) came to me that he has been thinking of how we can stop this mess. We were able to come to a conclusion on what exactly to do. We formed a group, named it B-Plus Projects. We were to mobilise people to clean up the entire campus and work with the Division of Students' Affairs on how to effect laws against defacing walls around the school campus. Note, we were actually finished from the school and probably do not owe the school anything but some people had to rise up and put a stop to the mess, we decided those people will be us.
The funny thing is that whenever we set to work-cleaning the defaced walls-, passers-by will always commend us of a good work and rain abuses on people that defaced the wall. Some will even ask us what we are going to get for doing what we are doing, by the time they realize we are doing it voluntarily, they are not just srprised, they are shocked. Must we do everything for money?
Well, so far so good, we have been able to clean up many of the places notorious for defaced walls- but just about 15 of us are involved and the population of the school is almost 25,000 students. We also had to wait back after session, refusing to go home and enjoy the holidays.
In summary, to make a change, there must be sacrifices and the courage to stand up against the status quo. Really, money is not everything. I enjoyed working with B-Plus Projects and i made a couple of friends and you know what, i will do it over and over again whenever the opportunity arises
