Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

During this week I've been meeting with some web developers in order to develop a mash up map where we can input locations where crimes occur. This came from a conversation where we shared how can we the citizens improve the security of Lima without requiring any authority to make an effort. The main problem we saw with authorities was that their programs usually involve many stakeholders and therefore it's difficult for any quick action to take place. Instead we planned to create this map and share it with the most local authorities (municipalities) and make sure they reinforce the security in those spots.

The main problem is that there are organized bands that work in small spaces and move in patterns. Mapping all the crimes could help interpret this patterns and see where do these people move. It's frequent that they will commit more than one crime per night.

This effort made by individuals could help raising the awareness of the places to avoid and help authorities consider adding security or just simple illumination in those spots. The mapping could also help to point out work being done on some streets so people can avoid traffic, reduce commute times and pollution. Another use will be to map where authorities are felling trees so we can hold them accountable and make them plant and grow 10 more trees in other place.

This initiative is a form to ease the access to information about the overall panorama of the city so that groups of people in those areas can ask and make small improvement in their sides of town. Hopefully this will be ready by July and if integrate with a platform like Ushahidi it could help more people get involved as cellphone penetration here is more than 1 per person.
