Leaving my fellow Evoke Agents, and friends, in Japan wasn't easy. There never seems to be enough time to catch up while secretly saving a country from famine. But, it is good to be home. The electric rail brings me virtually to my door-step, and my sons greet me to bring my bags into our home. A deep breath of fresh air validates that I'm home, and life is good. As my boys hurry my bags inside, I take a moment to remove some dead leaves from the plants on our front porch. The piles of snow have all but melted, and the time to prepare for out-door planting is at hand.
Another electric mono-rail car zooms by almost silently. I can remember when the roadway in front of our house was a constant rush of cars that competed for sound supremacy with the flowing creek in the back yard. The smells of dinner tug at my attention. My belly moves in approval as I complete my journey home and head for the kitchen.
My wife and our daughter are cooking. I see they have made an apple pie, from apples harvested in our own back yard. My daughter is still cleaning out the jar we sealed them in to last the winter. My wife doesn't put down her cooking spoon to hug me home, but is careful not to paint me with her home-made tomato sauce. A kiss on the cheek, and she is back to stirring in the herbs and spices which we keep growing year-round in our solarium.
My wife asks my daughter to grab some more parsley, but I interrupt. "I'll get it. I want to check on our indoor eggplants."
My wife laughs. "You won't find them in the solarium."
"What happened to them?" I ask.
"They are in the oven."
"Already?" I smile from ear to ear.
"They are a little smaller than what we got from our outdoor garden last summer, but they are going to be delicious! And I got cheese that was handed out at last week's Farm Punk meeting. It has locally grown garlic and spices in it. It wasn't easy saving enough for your welcome home dinner, but we managed."
"Well, thanks for that." I can't stop smiling.
"They will be selling more at this weekend's farmer's market. I think it is going to be a huge success for them." She looks back at her edible artwork in progress.
I search the counter top for any cheese scraps, but it seems it has all gone onto the eggplant already. I'll just have to wait.
"Well", I say, "A success for them is a success for the community. Who knew going green and eating healthy would turn out to be such an economic boon as well?"
"Ummm...", my wife says smiling. "You did."
I think back about the blog post I wrote ten years ago. I guess I did know something after all.
