I'm sitting at a table with a few friends. Conversation is light: music, art, science...
The meal sitting before us is a new oddity, large green lumps surrounded by smaller white lumps. It looks a bit like brussel sprouts sitting on a mound of rice. This is a new development from the sustainable foods department. All of it is genetically enhanced plant product. The large green lumps are a variation of edamame beans, chalk full of the essential proteins needed, but it has had gene's added to it that make it taste like chicken! There is also a slew of other things crammed into this springy green bit of vegetation...cactus gene's have been implanted so that it can grow in dry climates with little water, it's been sliced with an ivy plant so it can grow extremely quickly on large vertical pillars, the slight citrus smell emanating from it is from the splice from oranges giving it a natural nontoxic pesticide property. The small white lumps are a spin on potatoes...or mold...or moldy potatoes. They found a way to give mold the flavor and nutritional makeup of potatoes and is now grown in large vats. Tasty! All of this at 1/3 the necessary water consumption of maize and at 20 times the rate of growth. People still have an aversion to this stuff because they think it's unnatural...they call it freak food. They'll come around eventually. They'll have to. The soil can no longer sustain natural growth of foods at a high enough yield to feed everyone.
