I chose Derek Lomas from
PlayPower. I had seen his PopTech talk last year and had bookmarked his site but hadn't gone any further since. When I was browsing for a social innovator to follow I thought it was a good opportunity to get more involved in the great work the Derek and his organization is doing.
Personally and professionally I am very interested in using games, simulations, and virtual worlds to engage learning. So PlayPower's mission of supporting affordable, effective, fun learning games matches me interests perfectly. The fact that they are aiming doing so with a $10-$20 computer is icing on the cake. Such a great and innovative model to improve what learning games are available in growing markets around the world.
I found
Derek's Twitter account but it seems that his last posted in August of 2009. As a father I think I can understand why he hasn't been updating. His last tweet states that he is a new father. Crying babies tend to push social networks to the periphery. I messaged him to see if he is still checking his account or not. I am also now following PlayPower's
Twitter and
Facebook pages. It will be interesting to follow them in the coming weeks and see if there is a way to both help out and bring the work that Playpower is doing into my work.
