Young women in the Bay Area dropping out of high school, often due to teenage pregnancy, is a self-perpetuating problem. Many young mothers are unable to give their children a stable home environment and the benefit of a positive role model of an educated parent. Too many of these young women end up working minimum wage jobs, or dependent on the social services, which are stressed and limited due to budget constraints.
Next Step Learning Center in Oakland, California is a program to support the efforts of those who have dropped out of school and are seeking their GED, high school equivalency diploma. The Center provides a safe, clean learning environment where students can study independently, or have access to individual, one-on-one tutoring by volunteers.
Once an individual student earns their GED, Next Step Learning Center provides the next level of support as well. The Center assists in the college application process, technical school placements and internship procurements as well.
I tutor GED candidates in math every week. I also support Next Step Learning Center through annual financial donations. Young women who have struggled with problems at home, teenage pregnancy and other factors which prevented them from getting a high school diploma are benefitting from this well established organization. It is only able to continue doing this valuable work for the Oakland community through donations from people just like you and me.
