Problems are not always obvious from afar.
This is very salient advice. It is very difficult to fix a problem when you don't understand the issues involved. The advice can be applied to most situations whether you finding a solution to clean drinking water in Africa or trying to raise student achievement in the US.
My area of expertise is education. I focus on using technology to move the practice of teaching and learning into the future. I work with pre-service and in-service teacher from around the state of Maine through many different channels. My mission is to engage teachers in the learning processes that 21st century technology allows. My hope is that they take an active role in transforming the future of learning for everyone instead of waiting for it to happen to them.
This advice is key for creating a successful learning environment. Immersion in a subject allows for a greater understanding of the inner workings of any system. The closer you are to understanding the problems that arise in a system, the better equipped you are to create solutions work.
How do I think this advice could help me change the world? Great question. When thinking of what I could DO to meet this objective part of me wanted to go big and explain plans large brush strokes with lots of "if I had" or "if only." I decided that wasn't productive. So thought I would take the spirit of Evoke to heart and apply the advice to a local problem.
I work at a College of Education and Human Development. We currently have a portfolio requirement to get into our program. It is disconnected, disjointed, and doesn't really serve the purpose of a portfolio: to display examples of student work. We need a system that allows our faculty to better gauge student growth over time. I found that in the software Mahara. It will allow our faculty to see student work over time and hopefully allow us to see student issues as they arise. Allow faculty to understand students at a deeper level overtime. It will also allow students to track their own work. I successfully presented to a group in the college and have the go ahead to implement the system college wide. +1 for my college, faculty, and most importantly, the students.
