A crash course in changing the world.
I explored the internet to see what urban resiliency plans were in place in Gainesville and learned about an opportunity here at the University of Florida. The UF College of Design, Construction and Planning and the Program for Resource Efficient Communities in IFAS have collaborated to create the the Florida Resilient Communities Initiative (FRCI) which offers communities the technical and capacity building expertise of the faculty, staff, and students of these organizations. They provide insight and assistance in creating and sustaining local communities and regions faced with various threats, including natural hazards and resource constraints, as well as market hazards resulting from public and private actions. I shared this information with three of my friends Courtney Capehart, Hilary Hall and Caroline Forman and they were surprised to hear about such a program at UF. They all acknowledged that is made sense for organizations or the government to have policies in place for unexpended catastrophes but they had no idea these plans and coalitions existed for the public to view.
