From this
blogpost, there were a lot of great "secrets" (and maybe not so secret... sometimes you miss the things that are obvious and right in front of your face) of social innovation. The thing that really resonated with me was the point on "Try living for a week on $2 a day". I can't even fathom that, yet so many people do... or less... for their entire lives. This really comes down to empathy and truly understanding the plight of others. We see the scenes on TV... the pleas for donations... and yet, do we really get it? Have we become desensitized to it? It really comes down to the saying we've all heard: you don't really understand someone's problems unless you walk a mile in their shoes. I think I will try living a week on $2 a day, but I'm almost certain I'll fail as soon as I begin. To get to work would cost me more than that in fuel, or a train ticket... and that's not even addressing food, shelter, utilities. How is it possible?
Could we start a global day (let's start smaller)... where people are asked to live on just that $2 for a day?Money they would have spent above and beyond that $2 could go to those that live at (or under) $2 a day everyday. This will help build empathy... and help those that struggle daily.
