"Shadow Hero" sounds so dramatic, don't you think? Like a bad bootleg translation of "The Dark Knight."
Anyway.
I'm picking
Blake Jennelle because of his work developing the Philadelphia startup scene as a
DreamIt alum and founder of
Philly Startup Leaders, a support group for tech startups in the Philly area that, along with DreamIt and
Indy Hall,
has made a HUGE difference in the joy and viability of the Philly techscene. Those organizations and their attendant enthusiasm are a model for building a startup community anywhere that doesn't have one yet. Blake's latest work, appropriately enough, has been in starting a movement around what he calls "
missioneurship"--basically another word for social innovation.
I
chose him because his goals appeal to me and he's similar enough to me for the model to be realistic. We met briefly in person and have traded a couple emails, so I'd like
to think I'd be able to see what he's doing from pretty close up. Blake's not saving the world, but he's improving his backyard (but I repeat myself!). He's young (like me) and doesn't get everything right (also like me) but tries anyway, boldly and in public. He mixes the personal and the professional without being tasteless, a hard yet humane line to walk. I only wish I could get other people to congregate around my ideas like he has.
