A crash course in changing the world.
I had a chat with my neighbors about the topic: What do you think what happens if a catastrophe occurs? What mechanism or institutions do you think exist to help us, for example in case of a flood?
In general they think that the THW, the local fire brigade and the ambulance, combined with police forces and military backup, will provide enough support in case of emergency.
They were fairly well informed - one of their sons was a volunteer at the THW. I had quite a hard time finding any information about resilience plan, ecodiversity, adaptive capacity, disaster preparation, sustainability strategies, ecoservices, social capital, civic engagement, response diversity due to translation problems. Those terms I was able to translate properly just gave me, after research, the same answers my neighbors gave me.
So I had no new information to provide. In general I think the procedure is good. If we take a look back in time, if a catastrophe occurs like a flood in eastern germany a few years ago, even the military forced helped to fight the consequences. Of course a catastrophe destroys infrastructure which is needed for helpers to help- they can't if they are stuck in a trafffic jam.
But I think the combination of having not high risk of facing a catastrophe and having good infrastructure and institutions which are trained to deal with such situations make a Germany a rather pleasent place to live.
