An NGO based in our nation's capital is touring the country and engaging environmental committees of different universities. Their aim is to explore the possibilities of utilizing university campus as a place to grow crops of various kinds.
To someone like me who has not felt the warmth of the soil between his fingertips since he was a small child this offers a most extraordinary opportunity to clear the cobwebs built during years of intense book-cramming. This is something we were encouraged during the initial stages of our evokation careers: if we want to make a difference we have to have first-hand experience on the issues we're trying to tackle.
Like in every new endeavour those starting off have to bear the burden of symbolism. The first steps are the hardest as disbelief and ridicule are unavoidable. "Who would want to grow vegetables in a public place? It is absurd!" Well, why not?
It is important to set an example. To show people that things, however complex and demanding, are within reach. Even if there is failure, one thing is for sure: by attempting and creating something new we have raised awareness. We have shown that there are people with enough drive who will attempt against all odds. Inspiration, that is what we need.
