A crash course in changing the world.
The news story I chose was Palestine Adopting Significant Human Rights Treaties (http://www.unmultimedia.org/radio/english/2014/05/palestine-adopts-...). The UN Multimedia article explained how "the State of Palestine is bound by international human rights standards, having brought into force five treaties, with two others coming into effect in July." The first three treaties include the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The article notes that these accomplishments are unusual in a place like Palestine which frequently exhibits high resistance to human rights treaties.
From my own research, I found an article on Maztav.com titled "Palestinians Adopt Five U.N. Human Rights Treaties, U.N. Says" (http://matzav.com/palestinians-adopt-five-un-human-rights-treaties-...). This article explains that the treaties announcements is part of unilateral moves taken by the Palestinians following the collapse of their peace talks with Israel. In this frame, the treaties make much more sense.
