In Mission 9, 'imagine' we are asked:
What could non-doctors do online during a pandemic
to help? It can be anyone -- teachers, cooks, artists. Who else can you imagine saving the day during a pandemic?
And what immediately came to mind was: those who are wise about parenting, like grandmas and early education professionals. What is parenting like during a pandemic? Consider single parents especially. Must be tough, really tough. There are already established parent helplines out there, which tells me two things:
1) if we've already identified the need to give parents this kind of social support, we should definitely have something going during large scale (especially on-going) emergencies and
2) we already have at least some people out there who would be perfect to call on for parents during a pandemic - the people who already work with the helplines!
During pandemics and emergencies parents face extra stress and special challenges, especially single parents. So in times of emergencies, let veteran parents (eg grandmas) and professional parent supports be called upon to participate in the larger emergency network response by being available online for chatting, solace, and advice.
