'See and Do the Obvious' as a tip jumps right out at me.
There are so
many solutions just waiting to be developed. So many people already
have the solutions to so many problems. I often think of Hero of Alexandria
who invented the stream engine, a real technological advance, which was
largely ignored and treated as a toy way back in something BC. 1700 years later the same technology
was at the beginning of industrial development. We can't keep doing this. We do it all the time.
More than ten years ago, while working at a clinic I took my own smear
test. An extremely simple and straightforward procedure for any women
but not current practice. It occured to me then that many do not go for
cervical cancer tests because it is invasive, awkward and culturally iffy
but a DIY kit would be a very simple answer, mostly everyone who has a
cervix that needs to be tested, knows where it is. A few days ago I saw
that there is a current study to see if home tests are a good
alternative to increase take up. 'Hooray!' to the person who thought to do
this and got it done. How many of us, for how long, have known that
obviously it is obvious but didn't do it?
Obvious things are mostly ignored because people are not linked up
properly. Heros invention was to entertain nobles who didn't work, so
the idea of how the engine could work and save work for people wasn't
taken up. When I had my bright idea about DIY kits I had no way to
disseminate the idea and no contacts to take it up.
