The
AQUADUCT concept bike was designed by IDEO in response to the "Innovate or Die" design challenge to create and prototype a pedal-powered machine providing an environmental benefit. It offers an integrated solution to two key water security issues in developing nations -- transportation of water from source to point of use, and pedal-powered filtration to remove contaminants.
It's worth noting that there are a number of companies working on the problem of better filtration technologies that can remove a wider range of contaminants in less time. One example is
Seldon Technologies, which developed a non-woven carbon nanotube filtration system that removes or reduces chemical and biological contaminants and pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, giardia, lead, arsenic, mercury, MTBE and more. This kind of filtration technology could be combined with the Aquaduct delivery system to provide improved performance.
