Ritu was born in a poor family in Delhi 2010, and instead of going to school, she works in a tea stall. She carries a heavy burden. Her mother is ill and dying, and the father was working in a textile factory, struggling to feed the family. She has seven siblings, five older sisters and 2 brothers. The elder brother is into bad company, she knows that he and his gang are into trafficking, she has seen them rape her friend several times in the old station and dump her body in the tracks. She was found dead the next day. Her brother told her with a knife on her throat that if she would ever tell anyone, he would cut-off her tongue..The incident left a severe scar on her mind.
When she reached 12 years of age, she was married off to Bhawan, a 34 year old man living in Hyderabad. Her actual trauma begin when Bhawan forcibly drugged and raped her. She lost consciousness and when she woke up she was in a cellar like room. Her body was broken in several places and she felt an unbearable pain in the genital area . Her head was dizzy, it felt like it was hit with something blunt.
A man came and informed her that she had been sold to their brothel for a sum of Rs.30,000. She also had two customers waiting for her.
Five years later,
Prajwala rescues her. She has had four abortions and contracted several STD's. She is HIV positive. Rescue is hard because she is hostile and resists.
She has to undergo several operations for traumatic fistula.
She makes a friend Sana, another victim of trafficking. The pain they are going through is so unbelievable, they comfort each other to sleep.
For three years she undergoes counselling and psychotherapy
She is educated in life skills and social skills.
She is taught how to read, write and do simple math.
She is given massive support, her personality and self esteem develops.
Today, it is 2020 and Ritu is living in society independently and she is now a Primary school teacher. This decision took a lot of courage and wouldn't have been possible without the overwhelming support of the Prajwala team. A lot of follow up counseling and reunions ensure a continuum of support.
Emotional scars still run deep, but it is a new beginning for her..
