Public Speaking - NEWSKILL
A skill that I believe to be very important is the ability to speak publicly, ranging from saying your thoughts in a small meeting to a big presentation to hundreds of people.
Some people are lucky are find this a fairly easy thing to do, but for most of us it can be quite a stressful but with practice everyone can become a good public speaker.
To be come better at public speaking there are a number of things you can do, My top 5 suggestions would be:
- Know what your material - make sure you have a full understanding of your subject matter, that way the presentation feels more like a conversation, and questions wont throw you off.
- Practice - at home, in front of a mirror just give your presentation over and over again until your conftable and know what your saying. Get a friend to watch and evaluate if you can
- Study - watch other presentations (Dragons Den online is a good place to do this) and evaluate them see if they move around the room, use there hands.
- Know your area - if passable go to where you are going to present and do a test run make sure all the technology works and that your voice can be heard at the back of the room.
- Lead your power points! - if you are using a power point presentation, make sure you are not just reading off the slides! Power points are meant to be for visual use to keep people visually stimulated so have as few words as passable, never more than bullet points and use lots of pictures.

Try not to get stuck in one place.
Use all the space that's available to you.
Move around.

Speak to your audience not your slides.
Your slides are there to support you not the other way around.
Ideally, slides should be graphics and not words (people read faster than they hear and will be impatient for you to get to the next point).

self deprecation is the best! but i believe it should be well contrasted with obvious humorous arrogance.
i think i big pitfall is saying "not really", or "i'm just joking" after a joke. if they get it they get it if they don't you can make fun of them for it later. acknowledging the fact that you are being funny takes away from subject matter.

Some very good tips. I am one of those people that absolutely loathes public speaking. Its a huge hurdle I'll have to overcome in order to be successful in my chosen profession (screenwriter and filmmaker). Some very good comments, also.

Hey, thanks for the informative post. I like your mention of "it's okay to make mistakes" early on. I think what is good preparation related to "making mistakes." is to think of a couple of "recovery jokes" associated with typical types of mistakes like mis-pronunciations or technical difficulties and the like ... so if one of these situations comes up, you are prepared and you make light of it. This reminds me of how comedians often, memorize a variety of responses that they can give to hecklers, so that they get extra laughs out of a heckler interaction rather than being shut down.

Liza Davis, you make a good point about the heckler response. Early in my speaking career, I was blessed to be the in audience listening to Ms. Edwene Gaines, one of the best prosperity and tithing teachers around. She has a smooth and quiet way to retain her stage in the midst of those that heckle or attempt to 'steal the spot light'. She simple turns it over to them to take their own action steps, on their own time, encouraging that their item of angst is a valid project for them to work on.

I helped to start an public policy education committee/ debate club at UCF, where I attend college, and we're going over a lot of this information now in preparation for a debate. A person can have solutions to every problem in the world, but if they can't communicate them to others effectively, nothing will ever be done. This is particularly true in politics, which impacts everything about our lives.
The thing I would add to your list, when it comes to communicating big ideas, is to speak with conviction. I don't think people should be afraid to let their audience know they care about something, and that they really believe in what they're saying, and I think it helps to know how to communicate, not just information, but values.
