A crash course in changing the world.
Although many of the solutions for the water crisis rely on collecting rain water and using carbon-based filters to ensure health, I am most attracted to these techniques. Where possible, rain water collection is inexpensive, relies on simple technology, and individuals can do it (and manage it) themselves. At the most basic level of the individual home, the roof top is fitted with a gutter system and directs the water into a storage tank that is outfitted with a pump and a filtering system. This puts the first response to the crisis (rain water) at the location where it will be used...an individual home or public building. Thus, people do not have to travel to collect it. The best solutions are a) cost effective (so everyone CAN use them) and convenient (so everyone WILL use them).
For larger community projects, I am a supporter of Water Missions International's living water system to make large amounts of water available to individual communities.

In these cases, it would make sense for the community to create a public servant position (and a truck) to deliver water to individual households, rather than having each household send someone to collect the water.
