REDUCE. REFUSE. REHYDRATE.
On Monday, 24 March 2020, people all over the world will come together to celebrate clean water. The campaign has 3 components:1. REDUCE domestic water usage
(This component follows the Earth Day model.)
For 24 hours, starting at 00H00 GMT, do not open a single tap* in your home. Hoard drinking water beforehand, bathe in a nearby river, or stay alone at home so nobody can smell un-showered you. Find creative ways to make this work!
And after 24 hours, you might just have discovered some longer term ways of saving water in your home.
*or use an appliance that opens a tap indirectly, e.g. flush toilet, washing machine.
2. REFUSE consumer goods with high water footprintIn 2020, legislation demands that the "hidden water" content of all products is displayed on the box or packet. If this is not the case in your country, lobby your government!
Otherwise, use your consumer power wisely, and purchase fewer goods that require large amounts of water in their manufacturing process.
- 140L of fresh water to produce 1 cup of coffee
- 1,000L of fresh water to produce 1L of milk
- 1,350L of fresh water to produce 1kg of wheat
- 3,000L of fresh water to produce 1kg of rice, and
- 16,000L of fresh water to produce 1kg of beef

3. REHYDRATE children suffering from diarrhoea
2 million children continue to die every year from diarrhoea. This number has not changed for over 10 years, despite the discovery of a cheap, available solution: salt, sugar and water.
home-made oral rehydration solution (ORS) = 1/2 tsp salt + 8 tsp sugar + 1 litre clean water
Please donate clean 1 litre containers, salt and sugar at your nearest public health facility, and volunteer a few hours of your time to show mothers how easy it is to prepare ORS.
