Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Hello All

This mission asks us all to select one secret of social innovation. Hmmm... Just one? If I were forced I would probably select "Provide skills, not just finished technology".

In order to demonstrate, allow me to use Haiti as an example. On January 12th of this year Haiti was struck with a 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Several million people were displaced from their homes. Along with the urgent need for medical supplies, food and water, housing was, and still is needed. The typical United Nations response in this case is the tent. The biggest drawback to using tents is that Haiti is right in the middle of Hurricane ally. If a hurricane hits one of the tent cities there will probably be as great a loss of life as there was in the original disaster. Enter the Hexayurt. Enough has been written about Vinay Gupta and his design, so I will not elaborate any further. I will assume that his design will be approved and he and his staff will be on the ground in Haiti very soon.

There is no way that Vinay is going to be able to manufacture hexayurts in any quantity. He is going to have to teach the building technology to local workers and then have those local workers teach others so that there might be a slim chance that enough can be built before hurricane season arrives.

That is why providing skills is such an important "secret"

it's really amazing how many superior prefab housing models there are in the world. and teaching every community how to make them really is crucial.

Of course, the wh*** point of the yurt design is that it is easy to replicate with local materials. Actually, the ideal situation is if local production of Hexayurts to meet with a crisis continues after they've provided for their own needs, as an export to other places that need them. This way, not only do you solve the shelter problem, you provide employment and income, a small industry, that helps other places that have a shelter problem. The people go from receiving charity to giving it, which I think is spiritually valuable.

Good to know about Hexayurt. Years ago I was in Southern Central Asia and became quite aware of the aesthetics and wonderful uses of yurts. I've had a thang for them ever since...

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
