Croatia was hit as hards as any other country with the recent crisis, and as always the majority of the population (middle class and those poorer) that are hit the hardest.
With raging unemployment and increased taxes (yes, that is the brilliant move our government decided upon) those who were just barely getting by are facing many problems, and even those who were only months ago sure about their financial security now struggle to survive.
Even with reducing all costs of living there is one thing they all need. Food. And for many even that has become an insurmountable obstacle.
Thankfully the capitalism showed one of it's bright sides. The supermarket chains started lowering the prices of basic necessities in hope of attracting customers. And of many that span our country two have gone ahead to do something more.
First was
Mercator which started the "Family lunch for 50kn" action in March (the conversion rates for prices will be given in separate table so you can get the feeling for what it means to an average person). With the help of one of our TV-chefs they created a list of 20 recipes for an entire family (4 people) lunch. Ingredients for them could be bought in their stores for less then 50kn and were even specially marked.
It was a good start but unfortunately 50kn for a single meal is still a lot for many people.
And then came
Konzum which offered "4 person lunch for 30kn", with a new recipe each week. Again you could buy the ingredients at their store for 30kn and they too were specially marked.
I think that not only offering cheep food but also having a special promotion of this kind can help those who are hard pressed to enjoy what should be guaranteed to everyone, a warm meal every day.
You can find these and other (reference) prices in several currencies
here.
