A crash course in changing the world.
With its proximity to one of the world's Great Lakes (Lake Erie), Buffalo, NY is very fortunate to have access to plentiful and clean drinking water. Nevertheless, our local rivers and lakes are contantly threatened by pollution that, if left unchecked, could quickly contaminate our water.
Fortunately, a local group called Buffalo Niagara River Keeper (http://bnriverkeeper.org/) has been hard at work protecting our water since 1989. None of their programs use advanced technology to solve our local water problems. Nevertheless, their simple solutions to complex problems are awe-inspiring. One of these programs is designed to reduce the amount of stormwater that goes into Buffalo's sewer system. This is important because during periods of heavy rain the amount of wastewater going into the sewers can exceed the capacity of the sewer system, causing poluted water to flow into our rivers, streams, and lakes.
Buffalo Niagara Riverkeepers simple but effective solution to this problem is to promote the use of rain barrels (http://bit.ly/mrBbm). These barrels collect water from houses' gutter downspouts so that it doesn't enter the sewer system. This water can then be used for household chores such as washing a car or watering a garden. This is a great example of how a simple low-tech solution can have a big impact.
