Do the hard work needed to find a simple solution. As Leonardo da Vinci said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”—and it is the key to this type of design work.
I agree that many types of work are over complicated. Usually too many hand touch a product, everyone wants to put their stamp on it, and it becomes an amalgamation of what it needs to be, instead of just being what it's supposed to be. When helping out, or doing any sort of satisfying work that requires problem solving, a clear concept for how to succeed is key. Hazy ideas produce hazy work, which leaves hazy results. Simple problems require the most simple solution, not the one that costs a bunch of money, but the one that gets the job done.
For me personally, as a communicator, if I have a message for the world I want it to be as clear and concise as possible, so the broadest range of people can understand what I'm trying to say.
