I've been using affordable solar electricity in my life for the past four or five years. My bedroom is essentially off-grid with solar LED lights that charge in my south-facing window and a solar/dynamo radio that I had modified to charge AA batteries as well. My backpack has two solar LED lights that I use when riding at night, a flashing red LED and a steady white LED that velcroes to my helmet.
Based upon my experience, I've tried to convince people that small scale solar really works and is affordable now. My bedroom's equipment cost less than $200 and my backpack cost less than $80 - four or five years ago. This week I hope to finish modifying a 20 LED battery light to fit one of my solar collectors. That light cost $9.99 before Christmas and I bought two others just like it after Christmas for half price. The parts to modify one light cost around $10.
Survival electricity, civil defense electricity, refugee camp electricity - flashlight, cell phone, radio, extra set of batteries - can be affordably available to 100% of humanity. The technology is available. The only problem is a lack of imagination and vision.
